Tucson to Niagara Falls in 30 Seconds

2007

Digital Photographs, Video

In 30 seconds, the viewer is bombarded by 450 photographs taken by during a week-long road trip to Tucson to Niagara Falls, most of which were taken through the car window as driving along the U.S. interstate system at 85 mph. The work portrays elements of tourist desire in the post-modern western world, where digital media and accelerated travel allow tourists to experience sites and have an “authentic” experience in varying ways.  This piece also presents a commentary on the innate consumerism of today’s western tourist industry, which is not necessarily negative and can be appreciated by the contemporary traveler as an evolving form of cultural and social communication.  Overall, I hope to allow viewers to ponder the contemporary role of photography in the tourist experience as a result of the flux of digital technology that has contributed to a larger body of tourist documentation than ever before.
