Tippas

2011

Performance

In the summer of 2011, both of my grandparents died within 5 weeks of each other. As a way of mourning, I produced the art exhibit and performance event Memento Mori, which brought together a variety of artists across disciplines all exploring the theme of death and mortality. My contribution to the exbihit was a 3 hour durational piece called Tippas. The title refers to the name we use for slippers in my family ("tippers" with a thick New England accent). For this work, I held vigil for 3 hours, moving in and out of the performance space like an apparition, leaving traces of glitter and flower petals wherever I went. To maintain silence, I put clear tape over my mouth. To end the work, I ripped off the tape and began dancing to the joyous, Italian pop tune "Lazy Mary," which according to my mother, my grandfather used to sing in the shower to start the day. I grabbed the hands of the audience, bringing us all together in a celebration of life since even when we remember our mortality, we can never forget the joy of living
