Coming Home (Esse Quam Videri)
2011
Performance
I performed Coming Home as part of the "Lving Walls" event in Albany, NY, which is I was born and raised. For this work, I acquired a uniform from the high school I attended. For years, I have been having this recurring nightmare where I have to go back to high school to complete my senior year again. For Coming Home, I use a roll of contractor's paper and chalk as my materials. I created a soundtrack that was the sound of me scanning the radio channels as I was driving into Albany. For an hour and 20 minutes, I proceeded to trace the outline of my body as I rolled on the paper. As I was doing this, my body erased the marks I created. My uniform collected the chalk and I created/erased these traces. For me, the work was about "returning to the scene of the crime," but I also realized that it was about my memories of growing up. How I could revisit the place where I grew up, create new memories, but never stop collecting experiences.
